TAIPEI – Taiwan, September 3rd, 2019 – Toshiba Electronic Components Taiwan Corporation (“Toshiba”) announces the addition of new 16TB helium-sealed models to both the N300 and X300 Series. The 16TB models offer 14% more capacity[1] than 14TB models. The 16TB models also double the buffer size of the 14TB models, increasing from 256MB to 512MB.
The 16TB N300 and X300 Series utilize a 9-disk helium-sealed design, delivering increased storage density with a lower hard drive operating power profile. Toshiba’s laser welding technology and case design keep the helium securely sealed inside an industry-standard 3.5-inch[2] drive enclosure.
“Toshiba’s 16TB N300 and X300 deliver new levels of storage capacity and density while offering improved power efficiency utilizing our advanced helium-sealed design,” said Takayoshi Tokushima, Toshiba Storage Products Asia Strategic Alliance Marketing Senior Manager. “The 16TB N300 and X300 show Toshiba’s commitment to advancing HDD design to meet the evolving storage needs for performance, gaming, and small office NAS applications. As file size continues to grow, the 16TB capacity will enable both gamers and NAS users to efficiently store and access large amounts of data.”
The N300 Series is ideal for applications like home office and small business NAS and private cloud storage, with up to eight drive bays supported. Designed for 24/7 operation, the N300 Series has a workload rating of up to 180TB/year, 7200rpm performance and integrated sensors to compensate for rotational vibrations.
Designed for PC and high-end desktop workstations, the X300 Series delivers 7200rpm performance, drive stabilization technologies for improved reliability and Toshiba’s cache technology to optimize cache allocation during read/write to provide high-level performance in real time.
The N300 NAS series includes a 3-year limited warranty, and X300 Performance series includes a 2-year limited warranty. The 16TB N300 and X300 models are expected to be available in Q4’2019.

[1]Definition of capacity: Toshiba defines a megabyte (MB) as 1 000 000 bytes, a gigabyte (GB) as 1 000 000 000 bytes and a terabyte (TB) as 1 000 000 000 000 bytes. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of two for the definition of 1GB = 230 = 1 073 741 824 bytes and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity (including examples of various media files) will vary based on file size, formatting, settings, software and operating system, such as Microsoft Operating System and/or pre-installed software applications, or media content. Actual formatted capacity may vary.

TAIPEI – Taiwan, January 8th, 2019 – Toshiba Electronic Components Taiwan Corporation (“Toshiba”) announces MG08 Series, the industry’s largest capacity 16TB[1] [2] Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) HDD. With 33% more capacity than today’s widely adopted 12TB drives, and 14% more capacity than prior 14TB models, MG08 16TB drives are compatible with the widest range of applications and operating systems, and adapted to mixed random and sequential read and write workloads in both cloud and traditional datacentre environments.
The MG08 Series is Toshiba’s second-generation helium-sealed HDD family, and eighth-generation Enterprise Capacity HDD family. Toshiba has delivered its industry-leading 16TB capacity and improved power efficiency by utilizing the 9-disk helium design, introduced last year in 14TB models, and its own advanced precision laser welding process to ensure the helium remains sealed inside the drive case. The MG08 features 7,200rpm performance, a 550TB per year workload rating[3], a 2.5 million-hour MTTF[4], a 512Mib cache buffer[5], and a choice of SATA and SAS interfaces—all in an industry-standard, 3.5-inch[6] form factor.
The MG08 Series further illustrates Toshiba’s commitment to advancing HDD design to meet the evolving needs for storage devices suited for use in cloud-scale servers and storage infrastructure. As data growth continues at an explosive pace, the industry-leading 16TB CMR capacity will help cloud-scale service providers and storage solutions designers to achieve higher storage densities for cloud, hybrid-cloud and on-premises rack-scale storage. With its improved power efficiency and 16TB capacity, the MG08 Series will help lower the TCO of storage infrastructure designed for applications such as data-protection, big data aggregation, content serving and digital archiving.
“Toshiba’s new 16TB MG08 Series delivers new levels of storage capacity and density while delivering improved power efficiency for our cloud-scale and storage solutions customers. Only high-density HDD technology can achieve our customers’ critical TCO objectives at a cost of pennies per GB,” said Takayoshi Tokushima, Senior Director of Storage Products Marketing Group at Toshiba Electronic Components Taiwan Corporation.
Shipments of samples of 16TB MG08 Series drives to customers will begin sequentially at the end of this month. For more on the new 16TB MG08 Series, please visit:

TAIPEI – Taiwan, August 28th, 2018 – Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation, a committed technology leader, announced their new Enterprise Capacity 14TB[1] and 12TB Helium-sealed SAS HDD models. The MG07SCA Series features 7,200 rpm performance, a SAS 12Gbit Interface[2], and Advanced Format Sector Technology. The hard disk drive boasts an industry-leading, 9-disk Helium-sealed design and 14TB of Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) capacity for optimum compatibility. Toshiba’s Helium-sealed design fits into industry standard 3.5-inch[3] drive bays. A 12TB model is also included in the Series offering.
The innovative 9-disk Helium-sealed design utilizes Toshiba’s precision laser welding process, and a special top-cover design seals Helium inside the drive offering high capacity and low power profile to the product. The SAS interface provides 12Gbits transfer rate performance and dual port capability for data-path redundancy preferred by many storage solutions designers. The 14TB SAS model offers approximately 40% increase in maximum capacity than Toshiba’s prior MG06 10TB SAS models.
“Toshiba’s new Helium-sealed 14TB and 12TB SAS models expand the choices available to our cloud-scale and storage solutions customers. By utilizing an innovative 9-disk design, Toshiba provides both SAS and SATA models at an industry leading 14TB capacity,” said Takayoshi Tokushima, Senior Director of Storage Products Marketing Group at Toshiba Electronic Components Taiwan Corporation. “Our cloud-scale and storage solutions customers strongly value the power-efficient storage capacity enabled by Toshiba’s advanced 9-disk Helium-sealed mechanics. By using Helium to reduce the aerodynamic drag on the spinning media platters, the Toshiba 14TB model is able to provide approximately 55% (W/G[4]) lower operating power profile over the previous 10TB model, resulting in TCO benefits for today’s dense storage platforms and cloud-scale service-solution architectures. Only Helium-sealed HDD technology is able to deliver these customers’ TCO[5] benefits with an amazingly low acquisition cost per GB.”
Toshiba continues to expand its HDD product offerings with higher storage capacity and performance. The MG07SCA Series further illustrates Toshiba’s capability to advance the design of HDD storage devices for cloud-scale server and storage infrastructure, enabling more cost-effective data-protection, data-retention, content serving and digital archiving.
The 14TB and 12TB Helium-sealed SAS HDD models are available for sampling today.
